3 Secrets for Academic Success

Categories: Academics, News

Coming to college can be challenging. There are a lot of new things you must learn how to do and new things to be responsible for.

It is not uncommon for students to struggle academically during their first semester of college. The classes in college are typically harder than the ones you took in high school. They require more writing, critical thinking, and self-advocacy.

To be successful in my classes freshman year I had to work hard and apply myself. I now want to share three secrets with you that helped me succeed academically.

1 – Stay Organized

College involves a lot of juggling. From schoolwork to jobs, to living in a dorm, to feeding yourself– there are a lot of things to keep track of.

It is important to stay organized so you can stay on top of your schedule.

I recommend using a planner to write down your assignments and due dates. Planners come in many different styles and colors. If you find one that suits your personality you will be more likely to use it.

It is also important to keep your dorm clean. Don’t leave your clothes or books on the floor. Empty your trash can regularly, make your bed, and don’t clutter up your desk. Most students find that they can focus better when their dorm is clean.

2 – Do Your Work

This may seem like a no brainer, but in college students may slack off with turning in their assignments.

Forgetting about an assignment or turning in an assignment late is an easy way to negatively impact your grade in a class. I recommend checking Canvas multiple times a day.

At UNC Charlotte Canvas is where most of your assignments will be posted. This program has many built-in features to help you keep track of your assignments. Use the calendar tab to see when your assignments are due and check the announcements banner to see updates or special instructions from your professors.

3 – Utilize Your Resources

If you are struggling in a class your first line of defense is to talk to your professor. Many of my professors have expressed that their office hours are the most underutilized resource that they offer. Your professors are there to help you succeed so if you have a question don’t be afraid to ask it.

Make a tutoring appointment at the UCAE for individualized help with your classes. The UCAE is an amazing resource that comes included in your tuition.

For me, tutoring is a resource that can mean the difference between an A and a B for certain classes.

Finally, if you are struggling emotionally adapting to college life visit CAPS to talk to someone about how you can cope. Your mental health is vital to your academic success.

CAPS can help you work through issues and develop healthy coping skills. This is another free resource that you can take advantage of.

I hope these secrets will lead to your success in your first semester of college. Good luck!
