Susan Brenner

Susan Brenner

Ms. Brenner is associate professor of painting and drawing in the Art Department at UNC Charlotte. Her BFA, which took 20 years to complete, is from the San Francisco Art Institute. She received her Master's Degree from the University of Southern California. She has taught at UNC Charlotte since 1991. Ms. Brenner is currently on a year’s research leave supported by a UNC Charlotte RDL and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Her most recent digital work is on view as part of “Intrinsic Artifice: A Tale of Two Abstractions” at The Light Factory’s Knight Gallery at Spirit Square in Charlotte. This year she will also have a solo show of paintings at Wake Forest University and an exhibit of digital work in “Deliberate Interference” at Winthrop University.

Her interests include swimming and yoga at the local YMCA. She enjoys traveling and travels extensively in France and New York City.

Her favorite class to teach is a 2-week summer class, which is a field study in visual arts. It takes students to New York City where they visit all the major art galleries and museums for one week and then one week back on the UNC Charlotte campus.

UNC Charlotte offers her the opportunity to work with accomplished faculty, especially in the Art Department. She appreciates that while UNC Charlotte is growing in size, it is also growing in quality. She also feels that UNC Charlotte is an incredible bargain. The studio classes provide students with more opportunity to have individual contact with the instructors, and this enables them to grow and explore their crafts.

When asked what made a good art student, Susan replied, "A student who is passionate about being an artist and about his studies will succeed at UNC Charlotte. It is not an easy major, requiring dedication, and many hours of work, in and out of class."
