UNC Charlotte Sports
UNC Charlotte is home to the Charlotte 49ers who recently wrapped up their second year of play in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Men's and Women's Basketball, Baseball, Track and Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, and Softball are the Division I sanctioned sports at UNC Charlotte. It is Men's Basketball, though, that has become the cornerstone of 49er athletics. The men have gone on to postseason play 9 of the past 10 years (NCAA Tournament 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and NIT 2000, 2006) and won the conference Championship in 1999 and 2000. During the 2006-2007 season, the 49ers captured the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in Baseball, Golf, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Soccer, and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field. The 49ers also advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals in Baseball, finished 3rd at the Men’s NCAA Golf Championships, and received a first-ever NCAA bid in Men’s Tennis.
In addition to being accomplished on the playing surface, our student-athletes represent UNC Charlotte well in the classroom:
- The Athletic Department’s cumulative GPA was 3.001 after the spring 2007 semester. This marks the 22nd semester that the departmental GPA exceeded the university GPA.
- Thirty-seven student-athletes have graduated since August 2006.
- 150 student-athletes received academic honors in the fall and 153 received honors in the spring.
- Forty-six student-athletes were named to the Chancellor’s List by earning a 3.8 or higher for the fall semester and 43 student-athletes were named to the Chancellor’s List for the spring semester.
- Twenty-four student-athletes maintained a 4.0 in the fall and 30 student-athletes had a 4.0 in the spring.
The University also has a co-ed Cheerleading squad, along with a dance team known as the Gold Dusters, who have both won national championships in recent years.
